  • 2 highlighters, any color

  • 100 lined 3x5" note cards
  • 2 red pens

EXTRA READING

Your child must have a book to read for DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) on Fridays in advisory and actively participate in reading outside the school environment in order to elevate his/her reading skills and perform well on state exams, as well as to prepare for the literacy demands of higher education and the real world.  ELA teachers take students to the school library every other week to select books, or students may bring books from home, the public library, or a teacher's library. Students are expected to carry their outside reading book with them to all of their classes and encouraged to read it in their spare time both at school and at home.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR CHILD IN ENGLISH CLASS

  • Talk to your child about what s/he is reading for outside reading
  • Talk to your child about books you like to read
  • Know your child's independent reading level and help match him/her to texts
  • Encourage your child to read a variety of genres
  • Support your child's interest in reading
  • Encourage your child to read at home
  • Contact the teacher if you ever have questions about outside reading
  • Monitor your child's progress on outside reading.  Students are to complete a book project based on an outside read once per 6 weeks.  This project serves as 2 daily grades and is due on the fifth Friday of each 6 weeks grading period.  Project options can be found under Mrs. Diehl's document manager on the left hand side of this web page.
