About the Central Junior High School Band
The band program at Central consists of almost 300 students in grades seven, eight, and nine. Band begins in seventh grade. Beginning band students receive instruction five times a week in like-instrument classes. Eighth and ninth grade band students are divided into ability based bands.
The Symphonic Band, is the top performing instrumental ensemble at Central Junior High. The band is made up of 8th and 9th grade students by audition only. The band consistently receives the highest ratings at UIL competition, as well as various festivals. In fact, the Symphonic Band has been rated "Most Outstanding" and "Overall Champions" at almost every competition entered the past five years. In 2003, the Texas Music Educators Association named the Central Band 2nd Runner Up in the state of Texas for outstanding junior high programs. In 2006, the Central Band was named the top junior high band in the state of Texas. This band provides several opportunities for students to perform. Performances include: 2 football games, pep rallies, fall concert, winter concert, spring concert, solo and ensemble competition, UIL competition, as well as All-District and All-Region bands.
Concert Band is comprised of 8th and 9th grade students and is also based upon audition. Concert Band is required by Texas UIL regulations to play grade I and II music off of the TMEA prescribed music list. Concert Band does very well at UIL, earning first division ratings in past years. These Bands provide the same opportunities for performance as the Symphonic Band. Students in this band are encouraged to participate in solo and ensemble as well as other district competitions.
The 7th Grade Band is comprised of first year band students. Prior experience is not necessary. Students receive instruction on fundamental tone, rhythmic concepts, and basic music reading skills. Instruction is provided on the following instruments: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, French horn, trumpet, euphonium, trombone, tuba, and percussion.
The Central Jazz Band is selected through an audition process in late fall. Students who have completed beginning band can audition to be a part of the jazz band.
All band students who have completed beginner band are combined to be a part of the Pep Band. The band performs at Pep Rallies, Football Games, and other events like the L.D. Bell Pizza Dinner and Trinity Freshman Night.
