Dr. Buinger presented Steve Jacob, publisher of the Star-Telegram Northeast, with the Outstanding Media Award from the Texas Association of Partners in Education. He presented the award at the "State of the District" luncheon and address February 11.

This award is presented annually to media outlets nominated for support of their local school district and public education. Criteria to be selected include:

Quality of Partnership

Impact of the Partnership

Length of Partnership

Quantitative data on the impact of student achievement

The Star-Telegram has been an active supporter of HEB ISD for more than 11 years.

For the last three years, they have been a Donna Park Elementary School adopter, working with school staff to increase student achievement and improve academic performance; provide an environment to foster positive self-esteem; and increase parent and community involvement.

Staff members act as pen pals with students; conduct writing workshops for students to address state objectives; they provide tutors to students to improve writing skills

They provided more than 100 Thanksgiving baskets for Donna Park families in need; provide annual donations for the school’s Toys For Tots drive; collect canned goods for a school food drive; donated incentive funds for the school’s Reading Counts program.

In addition to all this, staff serve on the Education Foundation Board of Directors, provide complimentary advertising to promote school and PTA events; and they provide a weekly outlet for school news with the Sunday School Notes.

The Star-Telegram staff, at every level, demonstrates a sincere desire to improve the lives of the children of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD.
