Mardi Gras fun! During this unit, students are given necklaces of Mardi Gras green, purple, and gold as they collaborate. Each cooperative group writes a paragraph about a different topic. Students research and produce rough drafts before revising and editing the final draft of their paragraph, which is combined with the others into a complete paper.

On February 5, fourth graders sampled the wonders of Mardi Gras(Fat Tuesday) as soon as they had finished their afternoon tutoring.  Each 4th grade class shared a King Cake and one lucky student in every class found a "baby".

"Yum! What is this?"

"It's a King Cake."

" It is the most delicious cake I've ever tasted."

King Cake is not a traditional cake, but a Danish. It is decorated in the colors of

Mardi Gras. When you cut a King Cake there is a tiny gold baby doll in one of the

slices.  If you get the slice, you will have good luck for a year.  The King Cake

tradition has been around since the middle ages.  You can buy it whenever you

want, but usually for Mardi Gras. -Composite paragraph from 4th Grade Writing
