2)  Q What methods are used to maintain discipline at Hurst Junior High?
A

It is the philosophy of Hurst Junior High that students have the right to learn and teachers have the right to teach without interruptions. Therefore, it is imperative that students know and abide by the Student Code of Conduct developed by the HEB ISD. Students are expected to exercise proper conduct, demonstrate serious application to school work, and show due consideration for the rights of others. Students who violate the Code of Conduct shall be subject to the following types of discipline based on the severity of the problem:

  1. Counseling by school staff or administrators
  2. Parent/Guardian - Teacher conference
  3. Verbal correction
  4. Teacher Assigned Detentions - 30 minutes before & after school
  5. Administrator Assigned Detention - 1 hour after school Tuesday/Thursday
  6. Saturday School 4 hours
  7. In-School Suspension
  8. Suspension to home (short-term)
  9. Crossroads (short-term Alternative School)
  10. SOS (long-term Alternative School)
  11. Expulsion from school.

Disruptions

In order to protect student safety and sustain an educational program free from disruption, state law permits the District to take action against any person - student or nonstudent - who:

  • Interferes with the movement of people in an exit, an entrance, or a hallway of a District building with authorization from an administrator
  • Interferes with an authorized activity by seizing control of all or part of a building
  • Uses force, violence or threats in an attempt to prevent participation in or to cause disruption of an authorized assembly
  • Uses force, violence or threats in an attempt to prevent people from entering or leaving District property without authorization from an administrator
  • Disrupts classes while on District property or on public property that is within 500 feet of District property. Class disruption includes making loud noises; trying to entice a student away from or to prevent a student from attending a required class or activity; entering a classroom without authorization and disrupting the activity with profane language or any misconduct
  • Interferes with the transportation of students in District vehicles
3)  Q How can I make a complaint?
A
COMPLAINTS BY STUDENTS / PARENTS
Usually student or parent complaints or concerns can be addressed simply by a phone call or a conference with the teacher.  For those complaints and concerns that cannot be handled so easily, the District has adopted a standard complaint policy at FNG (LOCAL) in the District’s policy manual.  In general, a parent or student should first discuss the complaint with the teacher if applicable before requesting a conference with the principal (level one).  Then if unresolved at level one, a written complaint and a request for a conference should be sent to the Superintendent or his designee.  If still unresolved, the District provides for the complaint to be presented to the Board of Trustees.

Some complaints require different procedures.  Any campus office or the Superintendent’s office can provide information regarding specific processes for those complaints.  Additional information can also be found in the designated Board policy, available in the principal’s and Superintendent’s offices (or on the District’s Web site: http://www.tasb.org/policy .
