Bluebonnet Books

Five before Thanksgiving Break! Wow! Almost everyone took and passed Ada's Violin, and some of you alre nearly at the required five (5) Bluebonnet Reading Counts tests passed!

Did you share your Edmodo comments (and the video clip Mrs. Brown posted) with your parents and/or grandparents? It's an inspriational book to share - both for the message as well as the vivid illustrations. Remember: the more this year's twenty nominees you read, the more informed you will be come voting time in January. Happy bluebonnet collecting!

Reading Counts/Independent Reading:

5th grade begins the year requiring a minimum of 25 points for each six weeks of the first semester.  Second semester increases to a minumum of 30 points each six weeks. Ourclass easily beat the minumum amount last year, so set a personal goal in either points or words that is at a personally challenging level. Can you beat last year's total?  How about the million word award? If you got a million or moe last year, can you hit an additional million words?  The sky is the limit.

Keeping a list of the books you read - and even a Freytag plot diagram or Comprehension map will make the quizzes in September much easier.  RRJ letters are  a tools you may access during Reading Counts quizzes. 

Weekly Reader's Response Journal

(RRJ) letters

In 5th grade we add a second topic to each letter.  Look over the folder and example letters. Complete a letter each week on your independent reading book(s) - NOT OUR CLASS NOVEL. Your IDR (independent daily reading) should be consumed for the sheer joy of reading (and Reading Counts Points). Choose topics, authors, and series that interest YOU! Write about the part you have finished (log page numbers). You DO NOT (and typically should not) finish the whole book in order to write a letter.

Keeping notes about the authors' names, the book titles, and plot development (sketch out Freytags!) will make your Reading Counts (R.C.) tests much easier. Just like last year, BOOKS may NOT be used during a R.C. test, but one's own personal notes and RRJ letters are accessable.

Spell authors and titles CAREFULLY on the blue log sheet of your RRJ. Reading Counts is super picky about this aspect.

Check your rubric carefully before submitting your letter for a grade.

Vocabulary Test: typically on Thursday

Lexicon (the front page of self-generated sheet) & Study Guide(the back side of the self-generated study page): due Friday AM

Activity Sheets (the 2 preprinted worksheets in the packet): due Monday AM

Long Writing Assignment: due Tuesday AM  - ICPoW essay (occcasionally compound/complex sentences using each of the 10 core words)

Short Writing Assignments: due Wednesday AM - usually Word Webs, but occasionally assorted WordWork worksheets; Neologies; or 3 Acrostic phrase poems - depending on the week


Class Novels

Familes are encouraged, though not required, to purchase a copy of the novel in which to annotate. Notations directly in the book keep the inner dialogue between the reader and the author in a format which cannot be lost or fall out of the book or a journal. Check at Barnes & Noble, Half-Price Books, e-Bay, or Amazon for personal copies in which to annotate.

Novels provided by the HEB ISD PEAK program must be replaced if damaged in ANY manner. Our novels are shared between four campuses, and replacement will be strictly enforced. Please keep student novels in the gallon ziplock bag located inside your son or daughter's binder in order to minimize the chance of damage.

LOGS:

In 5th grade the "Citing" and "Expanding/Explaining" portion of the R.A.C.E. rubric factor heavily into the grading of the all reading logs. Special effort should be made to tie in 2 or 3 relevent quotes and explanations to the question on reading log as well as our current universal theme (Perspectives) and/or Sandra Kaplan's Elements of Depth and Complexity (language of the discipline, details, patterns, unanswered questions, ethics, rules, trends, multiple perspectives, across disciplines, and changes over time).
