HEB Takes Truancy Seriously



Did you know once a child starts kindergarten they must attend school until they have completed their eighteenth birthday?

Did you know if a parent/guardian/child is found in violation of the compulsory attendance laws they can be fined up to $500 for each day the child remains truant?

Did you know that a child shall not receive credit for a school year unless the child maintains a minimum of 90% attendance in a semester?

Did you know that excessive absences over the 90% attendance rule must have a doctor's note within three days of each illness?

Did you know the school district may initiate withdrawal of a child for nonattendance if the child has been absent 10 consecutive school days?

Did you know a child is subject to prosecution (section 25.094.TEC) or referral to the juvenile court if he/she fails to attend school as required by law?

Did you know it is the parent(s)' responsibility to monitor their child's attendance and the parent is subject to prosecution if the child fails to comply with the compulsory attendance laws?

Did you know if a child fails to attend or the parent /guardian of a school age child fails to send the child to school as required by law, a warning shall be issued by the district's truant officer that attendance is immediately required and a truancy conference is requested?

Did you know it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to call the school each day of the child's absence to explain the reason for the absence?

Did you know a child absent from school or class without parent permission and/or principal's/designee's permission will be considered unexcused and subject to disciplinary action?

Did you know absences not cleared within 72 hours will remain as unexcused on the attendance records?
