FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. It is a federal law which protects the privacy of student education records. Among other things, FERPA gives parents the right to inspect and review their student's education records, the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or misleading, and generally, requires written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information from a student's education record (except directory information).
